For a few days this past week, I had something difficult to deal with.
I didn't deal with it very well at first. At all! In fact, I was surprised by how I got thrown off my perch by this event. The 'why' is not important right now. Suffice it to say, I needed something uplifting outside of myself to get me out of it.
Suddenly, for whatever reason, I remembered the beautiful story of Susan Boyle.
I looked up her Youtube video again of the night that she stunned Simon Cowell and the rest of the Britain's Got Talent panel.
I sat crying as I reveled in the courage of this beautiful person from a small village. She put away all her fears of being rejected and ridiculed. It's priceless to see the utter surprise and delight on the judges's faces, as she starts singing...
Her touching innocence and wonderful, spontaneous behaviour that night, had me love every single thing about her. Again.
Years ago in South Africa, I read her autobiography. (The Life I was Born to Live). I cried through most of it. People were so cruel when she apparently 'lost it' and couldn't exactly handle all the fame and massive changes.
So after watching this original BTG show again, I found a BBC story of an interview with her, and her diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome.
Imagine how hard it is for someone to deal with not only sudden fame and all the attention and expectations.... but also the additional challenges that come with a brain that processes the outside world in a different way.
It all must've been so overwhelming for her. I had even more admiration for her than before.
And then, I watched the video of the incredible moment where she got the 'Gold Buzzer' at the America's Got Talent show...
At this show, she and Simon Cowell saw each other again for the first time in 9 years. He welcomed her back with open arms and the biggest, warmest smile.
Her hair was different, she had the most magnificent poise, grace and elegance. A stunning, quiet humility and beauty shone right out of her heart and lovely smile.
The song she sang -- "Wlld Horses"... Oh my word. Sublime. Her voice and the emotion she put into it are straight from heaven and all other good places.
The last song I watched on Youtube on my difficult day, was Unchained Melody - Susan recording the song in a studio with other musicians. I still cannot get over her beautiful voice and the expression she put into this emotional song.
If today maybe you needed some encouragement and inspiration, something beautiful and uplifting to make you believe again that there is love, beauty, humility, courage and strength in this world, here are all the videos I talked about in that order.
